The Toba Caldera National Geopark, one of Indonesia’s geological outstanding geopark, was formed by the Government of Indonesia in 2013 after the agreement of 7 (sevent) Head of Regencies around the Toba Caldera Lake. The geopark was then inaugurated formally by President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2014.
After operating for more than two years, in 2014 the Management of Toba Caldera Geopark sent an application dossier to UNESCO Global Geopark and was assessed in July 2015. The deferred decision with five recommendations followed by the reorganization of Global Geopark Network into UNESCO Globa Geopark (UGGp) have caused the Management of Toba Caldera Geopark to renew and resend the application dossier to UGGp in 2017. The National Commitee of Indonesian Geopark is now expecting the Toba Caldera Geopark to be recognized as UGGp.
Proposed name of the geopark is TCG (Toba Caldera Geopark). The theme of the geopark is “Supervolcano Caldera”, a volcanic caldera as the result of massive explosive volcanic eruption, that occured 74,000 years ago. This area locally inhabited by Toba Batak, Simalungun, Karo dan Pakpak ethnics.
